The processing style of Xinghai productions shifted considerably in the twenty-teens. Even under Guangzhou conditions, it’s somewhat doubtful that the sweetness could have emerged as early as it has here with processing methods previously employed. That said, there is zero detectable green tea taste. Stone-pressing is also a production distinction unknown of in earlier days. This adds up to an offering quite different from the trademark Xinghai house style from the naughts. It’s also clear that the LBZ is not drawn from gardens that possess pronounced medicinal and spice notes. By contrast, high mountain crispness and pure orchid prevails. Earliness of picking probably also factors. Finally, this ’14 manifestation is part of a series of single-terroir offerings with weird wrappers by Xinghai standards, likely reflecting the rapidly changing marketing landscape.
