Toasted marshmallow top note, sticky rice sweetness mixed with bracing bitterness and astringency. Piques salivation. Zen marshmallow huigan. Bamboo-tubed Bulang with a possible smattering of Naka no more than 15%. Intoxicating qi. Wicked compression; use bold infusion times. From Five Golden Flower of Menghai TF Zhang Jian-li’s Xinghai Tea Factory. In Los Angeles since Nov ’23.
Puerh Junky hasn’t run across other bamboo Xinghai offerings, so it is unique in this regard though true to bamboo expression. Naka is the crown jewel of bamboo puerh. The vendor rather disingenuously advertised this as Naka, while it doesn’t have the floral pizazz and funk characteristic of Naka. Other vendors have described it as Bulang, which typically doesn’t get bamboo treatment but which is the within the typical domain of Xinghai’s offerings. Xinghai does have a few relatively pricy Naka. Price here has been downward adjusted to reflect a Bulang production. Sometimes bamboo productions are not sold in the bamboo, which is the case with this offering. The vendor cut the 500g tubes in two, selling them in 250g allotments. Affecting proper bamboo productions can require some doing. This offering is well executed without any semblance of over roasting while still releasing the juices from within the bamboo that impart the sticky rice effect.
