Explosive camphor top note, settling into limestone slate peat and mesquite-smoked bacon. Wintergreen peat huigan reaching throat, drying and numbing astringency. Sweet too. Once it opens, broth is super sweet, thickens with attributes of raw puerh doing battle with extravagancies of processing and transformation. Electric qi, embers stoked, heat in belly, rising feeling of triumphant adulation. Then the cheeky salivation kicks in. Stored in Guangdong under obviously warm and humid conditions. Some humidity in taste. Uncharacteristic Ruan Dianrong 6FTM production. Stored in Los Angeles since Jul ’20.
Six Famous Tea Mountains began production in 2002. Like many, founder Ruan Dianrong (1968- ) has Menghai TF connections. However, Ms Ruan’s four-year stint dealt mostly with establishing production standards and marketing. Her role in helping Menghai/Dayi and puerh more broadly develop a consumer base cannot be underestimated, being the first to establish commemorative cakes, puerh tea art, connect Menghai with puerh in the minds of consumers, set up Dayi branches throughout China, promote tea tourism, and to publish on puerh through major Beijing publishing houses.
