BZ Wild King is traditionally processed arbor consisting of early spring Banzhang shengtai material from altitudes of 2000m above sea level. True to wild puerh form, a smattering of twigs and huangpian form trademark accents to a cake that has obviously been quite mindfully created and moderately pressed.
The drinking experience varies greatly upon minute storage variations. Fresh from moderate storage, the broth is neither especially bitter nor astringent unlike the typical ferocious Xinghai presentation. The taste profile is complex, expressing obvious watermelon or strawberry traits that combine with pervasive vanilla cream. The latter extends to the backend along with the huigan. Interestingly, the initial infusion had unmistakable celery seed and fennel notes that picked up later before resuming a mostly playful, dare I say, cherubic display.
After sitting out for one dry day, the broth more closely resembled the aggressive Xinghai personality with bitterness and smoke. The melon and celery seed stand out less in the presence of smoke and is considerably less sweet, with some mouth drying effects. Hard to believe they’re the very same production!
Batch 603, date stamp version, the first-two of entirely different wrapper design. As far as Xinghai productions from this era are concerned, the BZ Wild King distinguishes itself for its complexity and variability. Cream, fruit, and spice, bitterness, smoke, all factor depending on storage and duration between infusions. The creamiest among the Xinghai offerings in the collection, but cream is not the overriding theme. Rivals bitter-nail tea in later infusions. KM storage has been remarkably clean while affording a good measure of transformation. No humidity in the taste. Experienced drinkers. Stored in Los Angeles since Feb ’23. 3357g.
